Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
FUT, also known as the strip procedure, involves transplanting hair in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. During the procedure, a strip of skin is removed from the back or side of the head, and individual hair follicles are extracted from that strip.
FUT is generally quicker than FUE and may be a better option if a large number of hair follicles are needed. However, this method does leave a linear scar at the site of hair removal, which fades over time but is permanent.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE, on the other hand, uses small punches (0.8-1 mm in diameter) to extract follicular units directly from the scalp. This method has gained popularity due to its less invasive nature, quicker recovery time, and minimal scarring. FUE can also harvest hair from other body areas, providing more options for patients with limited scalp donor hair.
However, the procedure is more time-consuming and laborious, and some patients may need to return for a second day to complete the surgery.
Choosing the Right Technique for You
The choice between FUT and FUE depends on various factors, including your individual needs, the number of grafts required, and personal preferences.
Our experienced team at MAXIM Hair Restoration will work with you to determine the best approach for your unique situation, ensuring that you achieve the most natural-looking and satisfying results possible.
Both FUT and FUE use follicular units as the basic building blocks for hair transplantation, ensuring a natural appearance.
It's important to note that while both procedures leave scars, they differ in type and visibility. FUE scars are typically small and dot-like, while FUT scars are linear.
In some cases, a patient can have both FUE and FUT surgeries if needed, with FUE being an option if the scalp becomes too tight for further FUT procedures.
