Surgical Hair Restoration Options at MAXIM
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
FUT, also known as the strip method, involves removing a strip of hair-bearing scalp and transplanting the extracted follicles. This tried-and-true technique precisely transplants your hair follicles for natural results. The procedure begins with the administration of local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The surgeon then carefully removes a thin strip of scalp from the donor area, typically the back of the head, where hair follicles are most resistant to balding.
The strip is then meticulously dissected under microscopic magnification to isolate individual follicular units, which are groups of 1-4 hairs that grow naturally together. These units are then transplanted into the recipient areas of the scalp, where hair loss has occurred, using tiny incisions. The surgeon carefully places each graft to mimic the natural growth pattern and angle of your hair, creating a seamless and natural-looking result.
FUT does result in a fine linear scar at the donor site, but it is easily concealed by surrounding hair. The recovery time for FUT is typically shorter compared to FUE, and the procedure allows for a larger number of grafts to be transplanted in a single session. Many patients choose FUT for its efficiency and ability to achieve significant coverage in areas of advanced hair loss.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE is an advanced technique that extracts and transplants hair follicles individually, leaving no linear scar. At MAXIM, we use the state-of-the-art European WAW FUE System for optimal precision and graft survival. The WAW system robotically extracts follicular units one-by-one for seamless transplantation.
During an FUE procedure, the surgeon begins by shaving the donor area to provide better visibility and access to the hair follicles. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure your comfort throughout the process. Using the WAW system, the surgeon then extracts individual follicular units directly from the scalp, carefully selecting the healthiest and most viable grafts.
These extracted follicles are then meticulously transplanted into the recipient areas using tiny incisions, similar to the FUT method. The surgeon takes great care to place each graft at the proper angle and depth to create a natural-looking hairline and density. Because the follicles are extracted individually, FUE leaves only tiny dot scars that are virtually undetectable, even with short hairstyles.
FUE is a more time-consuming process compared to FUT, as each follicle is extracted and transplanted one at a time. However, many patients prefer FUE for its minimally invasive nature and the ability to achieve natural-looking results without visible scarring. The recovery time for FUE is typically longer than FUT, but patients can return to normal activities within a few days.
In addition to FUT and FUE, we offer a comprehensive range of surgical and non-surgical hair restoration treatments, including:
- Facial hair transplants: Restore or enhance eyebrows, beards, mustaches, and sideburns using follicles from the scalp or donor area for a natural and balanced appearance.
- Body hair transplants: For those with limited donor scalp hair, we can use follicles from the beard, chest, arms, or legs to restore scalp coverage.
- Scalp micropigmentation: This advanced technique deposits pigment into the scalp to create the illusion of fuller hair density or a closely cropped hairstyle, ideal for those with extensive hair loss or scarring.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy: PRP uses concentrated growth factors from your own blood to stimulate natural hair regrowth and improve hair thickness and density.
- PDO threads: The insertion of absorbable PDO threads into the scalp promotes collagen production and blood flow, encouraging healthier hair growth.
- LED therapy: Low-level light therapy using red and near-infrared wavelengths helps to stimulate cellular activity in the hair follicles, promoting thicker, stronger hair growth.
