hair-loss

During the early stages of hair loss, most people try hair shampoos, lotions, potions and other over-the-counter solutions. Unfortunately, none of these provide a permanent or real solution to hair loss and are unable to re-grow hair.

Drugs such as Rogaine and Propecia can stem hair loss, at best, if they work but do not offer meaningful hair re-growth.

Hair pieces, hair systems, weaving, bonding, wigs and other alternatives are unnatural, artificial solutions that are out of vogue and out of fashion in today’s society.  Moreover, these are expensive, maintenance-intensive and require ongoing visits and care which can cost at least a couple hundred dollars each month.  Quality hair systems can cost upwards of $4,000 with monthly maintenance in the $300 to $400 range.

Hair transplantation is the only natural and permanent solution for hair restoration.  It is a minor surgical procedure that takes hair from the back and sides of the head and transfers it to the thinning and balding areas.

There are two hair transplant techniques currently employed for hair restoration:

  1. The Strip technique takes a strip of hair from the back and sides of the head (donor area).  This strip is then dissected into micro and mini grafts of one to three hair follicles each.  Each micro graft or follicular unit is then implanted in the thinning and balding areas, also known as recipient sites.  Following the procedure, the donor area would have a scar that is covered by hair and not visible to anyone unless they look underneath the hair.
  2. The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure is a new and advanced technique that takes individual grafts or follicular units from the donor areas of the head and transfers each graft individually to the recipient sites.  This technique is more labor intensive but does not leave any scars in the donor areas.

The hair transplant industry is experimenting with newer and advanced techniques such as robotic hair transplantation, and others.  However, the verdict on the efficacy and viability of such techniques is still out and may take several years to perfect, if they work.  Therefore, at the present time, the strip and FUE hair transplant techniques remain the most proven hair loss solutions.
